  1. 1

Run the main photo through face search

If the same face appears under another name — a model, influencer or stranger — treat the profile as suspicious.

  2. 2

Check the username on other platforms

Real people usually have some history. A brand-new account everywhere is a warning sign.

  3. 3

Ask for a live, specific selfie or video call

A genuine person can hold up today’s date or wave on video. Repeated excuses are a red flag.

  4. 4

Never send money, gift cards or crypto

Requests for money to someone you haven’t met in person are the defining sign of a romance scam.

  5. 5

    Report it

Report to the platform and to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. If money was lost, also report to the FBI’s IC3.

Why photos give scammers away

Most fake profiles are built from photos lifted from real people’s public accounts. That’s why a face search is often the single most useful check. Read how to spot a catfish profile photo for visual clues.

FAQ

Scam check FAQ

What are the most common romance-scam red flags?

Moving fast emotionally, refusing video calls, a story about working overseas or on an oil rig, sudden emergencies, and any request for money, gift cards or crypto.

The face search found nothing. Is the person real?

Not necessarily. No match only means the photos aren’t widely published online. Keep using the other steps in this checklist.

Can I search on someone else’s behalf?

Yes, if you are helping a friend or family member check a profile they are talking to. Do not use it to monitor a partner or track anyone.
